Honestly this was a super fun read. It’s not like the craziest innovation, and there’s lots of tropes, but it moves fairly quickly and kept me interested which was key bc I’m coming out of a reading slump. My two biggest icks were the sex scenes were sooo unrealistic and not in a oh they were too good way
more in a holy fuck she went from like kissing someone for the first time straight to sex with functionally no foreplay and no gradual increase in things
and that the magic system felt poorly fleshed out
like it felt super unrealistic that a mind bender could be in someone’s head literally all the time and see everything without caveat and also at a distance and also seemingly for as many ppl as they wanted, just feels too OP for them to not literally rule society lol. Also I think the pirate/faeries have all of the magics and if that’s not true and coen doesn’t have them ill be mad

Rayna speaks to animals and Coen can not only manipulate minds, but can mind speak as well!? Magic is also branded on the students and if you don't learn how to use it, well, you get thrown to the pirates! Or do you? Hook, line, and sinker. This book was so hard to put down! I kept turning pages until 3am on a couple nights.

I absolutely fell in love with Lander and Melle, they were so cute. I never liked spiders and more very much before but let me tell you, if I could use them to be my spys and as a friend, I'd welcome them with open arms! I'm so sad that one spider didn't get his dream! And Willow is so darling! Okay, enough about the animals. I could go on and on about the world building and characters, it's just so perfect.

This book is like a mix of Harry Potter (magical school), Divergent, and Fourth Wing (Coen is definitely giving Four and Xaden vibes as a badass fifth year student who also holds some power). The world building captured me immediately and the characters are so likable. I didn’t want this book to end.

I know it's a while, but I NEED that next book now!

Sad 😔 I know this is YA, but this is *super* YA. Couldn’t get past the first chapter.

I loved this sooooo much!
THE LORE? obsessed.
THE LOVE? heartbreaking.
THE FRIENDSHIPS? amazing.

The magic Rayna learned made me feel like when i was reading Harry Potter. It was sooo interesting, learning about the personalities of every plant and animals was so fun and whimsy I WANT MOREE.

I wanted to break my kindle in half when i realized the second book wasn't out yet...
Anywayssss, here are some of my fav random quotes:

✧ Do you want us to end him? the jungle whispered in my ear… like a caress.

✧ “You’re slowly becoming everything to me, Rayna Drey.”

✧ Fine. Fine. Fine. I was beginning to loathe that word.

✧ “You are the hurricane that has ravaged my heart, Rayna, and you are the only one who can put it back together.”
