I'd never heard of the Tampa crisis or anything relating to it, so I was horrified to read about the actions of the Australian government. This is somehow both heartbreaking and heartwarming, and I think everyone should read it.

This is such an amazing story about overcoming the horrors of living in Afghanistan to attempting to come to Australia on an extremely overcrowded boat and not know whether you would survive to get to a free land. Whilst I remember the Tampa happening, to read about it in such detail taught me so much more about it and to see how the lives of those on board changed once they were rescued was amazing!

I am so glad I read this book, what an excellent memoir of Abbas’s story. I loved learning more about the people of Afghanistan, as well as more about the country.
We follow Abbas through his early childhood among the Hazara people in Sungjoy, Afghanistan. Unfortunately, as we all know, Afghanistan is unsafe with constant killings and his father starts looking into options of how to flee. “
