This was SO GOOD! I read a lot of historical fiction and I’d recently taken a step back because it was all so similar. This book was a breath of fresh air to the genre. It was beautifully written, stunningly visceral, and every character and scene was perfectly crafted. The book deals with a period of Canadian history rarely explored in fiction, and its progression through time really worked (which is often a critique I have of historical fiction). I love a strong female main character, and I love when a good makes you cry for a dozen different reasons. Easy 5 stars from me.

At the Mountain's Edge is a nice mix of historical fiction and romance, heavier on the historical fiction. The book revolves around Liza and Ben, a shopkeeper and a Mountie, during the Klondike Gold Rush. The story is told in alternating POV chapters giving you insight into each characters life. When they meet Liza is in the process of losing everything and Ben is a broken man. While it is not until the end of the story that they get together it feels more real in a way. They are two characters who learn their own worth over the four years of the book and end up knowing what the deserve.

If you are looking for the steamy historical fiction romance novel this is not for you. It is more of a triumph over hardship and find love in the end novel. I might go read some other Genevieve Graham novels and experience other major Canadian historical events/times.

Set against the background of the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890s At The Mountain’s Edge takes the reader deep into the desolate and treacherous reaches of the Yukon into the to world of gold prospectors, salons, guns and thievery!

When you Liza Peterson’s fathers unexpectedly decides to pack up his family and undertake the long and arduous journey to Dawson City in the hope to profiting off the booming population migrating there she has no idea what to expect. But she certainly wasn’t prepared for the forbidding north and tragedy that awaits her on the trail. Ben Tuner is a Mountie with a past he isn’t ready to face but has found solace in the routine and rules of the North West Mounted Police. Assigned to Dawson City to help police the illicit activities that are thriving in the town Ben is eager to prove himself. When Ben and Liza seem to keep running into each other an unlikely friendship begins to grow into a budding romance, but there are many dangers in the North and neither of them are sure they are equipped to handle it.

For someone who lives in Canada I don’t have that much knowledge of the Klondike Gold Rush aside from a project I did on Robert Service in highschool and so this book was an interesting introduction to the frenzy that was gold mining in the Yukon. It was fascinating to read about the lengths that people went to in order to even get to the gold fields to even have a shot at hitting the jackpot. Liza and Ben’s story was a sweet romance with a dash of historical detail into a major event in Canadian history. The plot moved at a good pace and although it relied heavily on coincidence at times it did not feel unbelievable. This book would be a great read for those who like light romance in a unique setting.

Thank you to the author and Simon and Schuster Canada for my copy of this book in exchange of an honest review

Another GG book... devoured!

This is it for me until the new book is released... :(

I really enjoyed this story, like I have with all the others before it, I learned a ton about the history of the Mounties and about how difficult the trek to the gold rush towns was!

In 1897, the discovery of gold in the desolate reaches of the Yukon has the world abuzz with excitement, and thousands of prospectors swarm to the north seeking riches the likes of which have never been seen before.

For Liza Peterson and her family, the gold rush is a chance for them to make a fortune by moving their general store business from Vancouver to Dawson City, the only established town in the Yukon. For Constable Ben Turner, a recent recruit of the North-West Mounted Police, upholding the law in a place overrun with guns, liquor, prostitutes, and thieves is an opportunity to escape a dark past and become the man of integrity he has always wanted to be. But the long, difficult journey over icy mountain passes and whitewater rapids is much more treacherous than Liza or Ben imagined, and neither is completely prepared for the forbidding north.

As Liza's family nears the mountain's peak, a catastrophe strikes with fatal consequences, and not even the NWMP can help. Alone and desperate, Liza finally reaches Dawson City, only to find herself in a different kind of peril. Meanwhile, Ben, wracked with guilt over the accident on the trail, sees the chance to make things right. But just as love begins to grow, new dangers arise, threatening to separate the couple forever.

Geneieve Graham quickly became an auto-buy author for me after reading The Forgotten Home Child. I was ecstatic when a dear friend gifted me a copy of At the Mountain's Edge so I could continue to explore her backlist and learn more about aspects of Canadian history I know very little about.

Set in the late 1890s, against the backdrop of Dawson City and the Klondike Gold Rush, Genevieve's incredible passion for Canadian history and impeccable research is evident throughout the entire story. Told in dual perspectives, the writing was fluid, making it easy to read. At no point does it get bogged down with too much detail.

I really felt like I was journeying along with the Peterson family as they embarked on their grueling expedition to the North. The descriptions of the landscape and what they had to go through felt very real. While the romance was quite predictable, it took a back seat to the sacrifices and lengths people went through to get their piece of the prize. Additionally, I really appreciated learning about the mounted police. I think it was a great addition to the plotline and gave an additional perspective of the times and conditions of living in Dawson City.

Overall, a solid, interesting and emotional take on an aspect of Canadian history I knew very little about. I look forward to continuing to explore Graham's backlist, and will be eagerly anticipating whatever she writes in the future.

"The Earth, she knew - even without Stan's lessons - was forever spinning on its axis, its place in the universe set. But within those boundaries, nothing ever remained the same. Running water cut a continuously changing path; the seeds of flowers rode winds to populate new ground. She, too, felt herself changing, growing, adjusting. And as long as she could bend and grow like the feather-soft heads of grass dancing in the breeze all around her, she would thrive. And even flourish."

WOW!! Genevieve Graham does it again!

The author really does her research when she writes and the books are always ones that I am hooked on her stories.

This book has action and angst. I very much loved Ben and Liza and some of the characters that are met along the way. This book made me smile and sad.

If you are into Historical Fiction I very much recommend this book.

This is one I know I will be reading again and again in the future.

I am giving this 5 out of 5.

This book brought me right back in time to the Klondike gold rush and life in Dawson City! It was very well written, packed with detailed descriptions, and made me feel like I was living the adventure. Highly enjoyed the characters and storytelling. There’s a romance, without the novel turning flighty. Great Canadian author, and Yukon history here!
