Today I read a short story called "The House Plant" by Jeremy Ray, which was sent to me in exchange for a review.

First of all, so much is packed into this lovely little story. The story is told from the perspective of a grumpy fern that has lived in a store its whole life and has no intention of living with humans. Much to its chagrin it is picked up by Brenda, a woman who thinks that the plant was just waiting for her to rescue it from the store.

What follows is the fern's development as it learns to live with Brenda and I was quite taken with how much character this stubborn fern had. I can't say much more without spoiling it since it's a very short tale!

If you love plants or know someone who loves plants and nature, do check this one out! It is free on Kindle Unlimited or you can easily find it on Amazon. The author also has other short stories and novels and I'll definitely be reading more from him!

Also, this ebook comes with a micro-story that made me feel a lot! It involves dandelions and the gift of being unique.

Jeremy Ray’s new short story The Houseplant tells the story of George, a fern, who wants to stay in the Garden Palace until he is bought by Brenda. George doesn’t appreciate being taken away from the other plants. He decides immediately that he isn’t going to like Brenda or her family. Over time, George comes to trust Brenda until tragedy strikes.

A short story about a houseplant? Doesn’t sound like something you would read? Let me tell you that the author packs so much into this story that you will be left thinking about it for a long time. It’s a heartwarming story about trust, grief and loss. You can’t help but feel sorry for both George and Brenda and be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions (one minute I was laughing, the next I was bawling- definitely got invested in the characters!).

Ray’s stories are so different (I recently read the horror novella Petrified Women) and I love his range of topics. I’m not a plant person but thoroughly enjoyed this story.

If you’re looking for something a little different and a little out there, get a copy of The Houseplant (you can find it on Amazon and it is free on Kindle Unlimited)

Thank you to Jeremy for the arc!

I never thought I would be reading a story from the perspective of a houseplant - and enjoying it - but this short story was really good!! I loved Jeremy Ray’s writing and the way the story was told. It was entertaining. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author. ☺️

Surprisingly impactful short story, I recommend it as it's worth the read. Makes me think more about my house plants!
