It's mindboggling and disappointing that de Beauvoir's research and documentation of feminism in the 1940s could be ripped from the pages of culture and society today. An excellent companion read to Feminine Mystique, both remind of the oppression behind us and the work still ahead.

This is my first time reading through the entirety of "Le Deuxième Sexe" and I enjoyed it even more than just the excerpts that I've read and worked with throughout the years. Definitely would urge anyone to read what de Beauvoir has to say about crucial aspects of society.

I never definitively decided i wasn't going to finish it. I was reading at a really slow pace because it is extremely dense and then i got too busy with uni and work, so i never continued it. I want to finish it some day though.
El Segundo Sexo de Simone de Beauvoir es sin duda una lectura obligada para todo aquel que quiera entender los preceptos iniciales y angulares del feminismo occidental. Debe realizarse de manera dedicada y detallada, es tanta la información que puede encontrarse en este texto que si no se realiza un ejercicio de lectura juicioso, es probable que se pierdan muchos detalles y elementos importantes. Seguramente mi lectura fue de esta manera.
No fue una lectura fácil, de hecho, hubo momentos donde no entendía nada y tenía que releer o para por un tiempo, meses incluso. Así como hacer esta pequeña reseña me pudo haber tomado días, no es fácil entender in a nutshell lo que de Beauvoir quiere presentar, que no es más que el panorama completo de lo que representa ser mujer en el mundo occidental.
Por supuesto, a veces durante la lectura surge la duda de qué tipo de mujer esta hablando. En algunos apartes de los capítulos es díficil identificarse con las situaciones que se presentan en el texto, y es que la lectura debe hacerse considerando que fue publicado en 1949.
El rol de hija, esposa y mamá sigue siendo casi siempre el mismo y la relación de las mujeres con los hombres y cómo nos definimos a partir de ellos también perdura.
Es una lectura que debe hacerse, pero no habrá que quedarse únicamente con este texto, sino considerarlo como el inicio y base de un movimiento que ha crecido mucho y tiene variedad de autoras que lo han abordado.
Finalmente, vale resaltar el espíritu del libro por propender la igualdad de oportunidades entre hombres y mujeres pero identificando desde el primer momento que hay diferencias y constructor que nunca nos harán iguales.

This took me so long to finish oh my fucking god. The first part was amazing, really (and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants contact with one of the cornerstone books of Western feminism) - but the second part really didn't pass the test of time and it's quite outdated (happily so, since it discusses the condition of woman in current times, and one would hope that so many decades later, it is at least slightly better). Could have been a tiny bit shorter though, since a lot of ideas I feel are repeated throughout the book.
Also some points off bc de Beauvoir was into illegally younger people and I couldn't care less about the ideas of those times or whatever.

2 stars taken off are for the homophobia and racism because my jaw dropped and my eyes rolled out of their sockets. it was incredibly interesting to read, not so complex but great to analyze and annotated. there's so much material and so many nuances to each chapter, each excerpt and after seeing it quoted in some of the best essays and videos essays, it didn't disappoint. I hate the woman but I can recognize a fundamental work. it deserves its title.
