I'm a sucker for a good Orc story line and this is definitely one of my favorites. Then again, I love the entire Black Bear Clan series. I really liked the main characters, Ozork and Willow. There is clearly a bit of an age gap between them but they really fit perfectly together. I love how honest they were with one another. Great communicators. This was a slow burn and more about the forming of their romance than actual plot but with great characters like these, who can complain?!

Lady Willow (h) is ostensibly dispatched to the orc kingdom as an ambassador, in reality it’s a matter of out of sight, out of mind, after an overzealous suitor after her dowry got too handsy and ended up losing en eye to an infection after her cat, Thistle, defended her honor with claws out. After an arduous wintry journey to the Black Bear Clan, Willow is immediately scented by orc warrior Ozork who realizes she is his mate. She feels the pull of her bond with Ozork and spends time with him learning the ins and outs of the clan but struggles because this very information is what her uncle has tasked her with secretly learning in order to learn the kingdom’s strengths and weaknesses. Things heat up between the two and Willow is torn by her feeling for Ozork and her sense of duty. Ozork is so sweet and caring for Willow as he guides her around, patiently waiting for her to accept their bond. Willow was always lovely and strong, with a good head on her shoulders, but she comes to realize what she wants in life and how much freedom she’ll have with Ozork. Thistle was too much. Hot and steamy orc-human fated mates romance with a side of angst and some humorous moments.

Since Vark got his book, I have been waiting for sweet Ozark to have his chance to shine, and I can honestly say like he did not disappoint. Literally, I was swooning for him. Now, as far as Willow… I was not really disappointed, more continually annoyed. I mean I do not dislike her per se. It is more that there was specific times where she is annoyed me wildly so. She is by far my least favorite of the female leads, though I do enjoy how Ashwood writes her struggle with anxiety. Ozark was well worth the wait.

This was a little lighter than the previous Orc books but I still loved it. These are my comfort reads when I need to get away from toxic book MMCs and read about males that cherish their women and treat them like queens.
