The first three-quarters of the book were good. I didn't enjoy it as much as the third book, The Crow, but The Singing was still more interesting overall than the first two books. For some reason, Croggon writes male characters with more depth than her female characters, and that's . . . frustrating. The one conversation between two women with no men present in this book epically failed the Bechdel Test, if anyone was wondering.
Anyway, the last quarter of the book dragged on with no real sense of urgency. I wish Croggon had let us into the madness the FMC was spiraling into, because it would've been much more interesting. Instead we got yet another travel-for-days-to-reach-a-place-before-bad-happens. As for the FMC's relationship with her love interest, that felt, well, forced. Slapped on at the end with no real building or crossing from friendship to lovers. Not a fan of that.
I like my FMC's with more agency and personality than "I don't know what I'm doing and it scares me."

I deeply loved this series. The characters were amazing and the author's detailed descriptions drew me into this world. I wished the series had not ended. I would love to read more of the characters' adventures.
Da wird über 4 Bücher hinweg die Spannung aufgebaut und zum Schluß lieblos einfach aufgehört.
The whole Pellinor series was fantastic but The Singing was easily the best of the quartet! I loved seeing all the characters growing and I had a big grin on my face through the whole epilogue!
And who doesn't love Irc?

The Singing was all I thought it would be. A truly lyrical novel. This one is scary, but not as dark as the last one. Alison Croggon is an amazing author. These novels have the taste of the Lord of the Rings series, but in an easier to read flavor. The characters are rich and developed. My only problem with this last book was the relationship between Cadvan and Maerad. I don't know why I didn't want them romantically linked. I think it was because I saw Cadvan in my mind as Maerad's father figure. She was 15 or so when he found her and began to teach her. He was like what like 30? I know, in these books bards live extra long lives, but she was a bard too. I just didn't see that connection between them. But, you know everyone loves a happy ending, and this definitely was that! I can't wait to see what else Croggon comes up with. I love an author with a good imagination!
I was highly surprised at most of the events in this story. It was most intruiging and amazing!
The Singing is the fourth book in the series The Book of Pellinor. It is the conclusion I have been waiting for since I read the first three last summer. It did not let me down, which makes me tremendously happy. (I hate it when endings do not live up to the book or series!) As with many endings, however, I was sad to see it, as I truly love the world that has been created, and the characters who live there.
The Book of Pellinor tells the story of Maerad and her brother Hem, how they come to the knowledge that they are fated to save the world. The Nameless One has been spreading his evil over the world, and in The Singing, they come to their only chance to stop him. Getting there is a trial. Book three of this series, The Crow, focuses solely on Hem and his journey - the last we heard of Maerad was in book two. They spend the first half of The Singing simply trying to reach each other, which is nearly impossible in their war-torn world. But of course, as with any good fantasy, the happy ending is there, even if it is different than what you imagined.
Croggon has done a marvelous job in building this world, and I truly love her characters. I think Hem is probably my favorite, along with his crow friend Irc. Maerad is difficult to love, although she is an excellent character - very conflicted and full of life. The supporting characters are also great, making the reader feel as though they are spending time with good friends. This is definitley a fantasy series I would recommend to any lover of the genre.
