A compelling read. Perfect mix of slow burn romance and mystery.

Having read the Charley Davidson series I queued this assuming there would be a supernatural side to this series. So it was a bit out of my normal reading because I almost exclusively read UF and PNR. It was a nice change though and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I laughed out loud at some of the customary chapter-starting quotes and I cried at some of the scenes too.

For about the first half of [b:A Bad Day for Sunshine|45046796|A Bad Day for Sunshine (Sunshine Vicram, #1)|Darynda Jones|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1585007642l/45046796._SY75_.jpg|69749698] I thought that Sunshine wasn't for me; in fact, had it been written by anyone other than [a:Darynda Jones|4175419|Darynda Jones|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1599861160p2/4175419.jpg] I would have given up. Sunshine just seemed WAY too immature to be a Sheriff and a respected detective.
But then at about half way through, the action picked up and Sunshine really stepped up. I read the entire second half of the book in one sitting and I couldn't put it down until I knew what happened.
I can't wait to read what happens next.

Oooh this was good. I love Darynda's writing but I felt frustrated with the Charlie Davidson series at times, in fact I haven't finished the series.
This has somewhat a similar style but still was very different. It follows Sunshine and Auri - a mother and daughter through a dangerous investigation. Auri is a teenager but a pretty grounded one. Sunshine is the newly elected town sheriff. She can be a bit sarcastic and silly but is much more grounded that Charlie, they would be friends.
There are mysteries surrounding kidnappings - one new and one old.
Can't wait to read book 2.
