first sally rooney book. i wanted to love it but unfortunately i just hated the characters. i’m not even sure if that was the point or not. alice would have been the most relatable and my favorite, except she’s rich so she’s taken out of contention. eileen is just insufferable. felix is an asshole with no clear motivation for anything. simon is underdeveloped and boring - his only character trait is that he apparently loves jesus, except thats not even actually relevant. this book would’ve been more interesting if the men did actually get together. eileen and simon were a fine, expected couple. alice and felix practically hated each other and said as much every 5 pages so i don’t know what that was about. and eilwen and alice had a shitty friendship which they both recognized but were too codependent to do anything about.
was this just supposed to be a random slice of life from some annoying, mostly unlikable people? maybe. if there’s a deeper point here i am too shallow to recognize it. i didn’t hate this book, but wow was it a chore to get through with not much payoff

Idk, felt very fake-deep. I feel like it thought it was really doing something with the email chapters but it was not. Pretty boring, honestly

I enjoyed the writing and how the characters are developed, even the emails between the two main characters (which I suspect will annoy and seem irrelevant a lot of people) But, after thinking about the ending for a bit I realized that it basically ended with the two neurotic, complex women being rescued from their own unhappiness by men. Which is fine in the moment because you’re rooting for things to work out, and it’s fine if you know you’re reading a genre romance and what a happily ever after but is also a bit disappointing if you think you’re reading something a bit more complex.
