I wasn't in love with this like I thought I would be. I found the characters self-absorbed, uncommunicative & I had a hard time understanding why they acted the way they did - although maybe that's because I haven't had much personal experience with mental illness and recovery, and it's me being callous. However, I was so happy to read that . I couldn't help but draw connections to Rooney's other books, all of which seem to have similar characters and themes - gatherings of four, childhood connections, abusive/neglectful family and siblings, authors and literary creatives, conflict between low income and wealthy characters. Descriptions of the social gatherings the main characters attend & scenes near the ocean were my favorite parts of the book.

I couldn't find myself to get really into this. I'm afraid I'm just not in the right headspace for this novel right now, I might try again in the future.
This book was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Fluid yet abrupt and a welcome change of pace in my rather repetitive literary pursuits.
