Rooney plays with form in her third book, switching back and forth between epistolary email responses and a very detached third person POV of two female characters in the publishing industry struggling with a man on the side they can’t seem to communicate their needs to. I’d consider this book very meta, almost the writers own woes exploited.

Enjoyable read. Sally Rooney writes about anxious intellectuals who are terrible social nuance in such an engaging way.
Eileen is definitely autistic though right? It makes her struggles that would otherwise be so frustrating click into place. Noticing it in her made me reflect on characters in Rooney’s other books and now I can’t unsee it. Lots of social nuances missed and purposely arranging faces with specific expressions and other signs of masking. Did anyone else pick up on this?
