"In the end, the tortures tearing the Lisbon girls pointed to a simple reasoned refusal to accept the world as it was handed down to them, so full of flaws."

EDIT: Just found out this book was NOT intended to be satirical. The author thinks these boys’ obsession and voyeurism is normal and “romantic”. Gag. I didn’t even talk about the satire in my original review because I thought it was so obvious. I still like the book, but you HAVE to read it and just think about the irony of the author trying to write a romance and just coming off incredibly creepy. Eugenides is one of the gross voyeurs, a man who thinks women are so aside that they will never be understood. He went so far into that belief that he accidentally landed in satire. There is no way a woman can read this and take it at face value.

The author is dead, the irony of this book killed him.
Still, my rating might change as I think more about this discovery. I don’t know if I can completely erase the fact that this author meant to be serious and actually sees these dead children like this.

Mundanely captivating? A dry enthralling read? This book feels like headaches and nausea that go unexplained while you’re tired and laying in bed on a Sunday afternoon. I have so many unanswered questions.

This is one of my favourite movies in part due to the visuals so I was curious how the book would hold up for me, but the language is so evocative and the imagery is so well done that each scene was vivid in my head as I read, and as someone who usually doesn’t visualize novels very easily I was extremely impressed!!

believe it or not-- this book has suicide in it. very glad i did not find this book in high school or we might not be hearing from me right now.... FAV book though!!!!
