These characters were weak. I was just looking at the words as if it was homework. Very uninteresting plot.

Received this from a Goodreads contest as a ARC and I am not required to post a favorable review.

I loved the last chapters the best when Vera was close to dying in an assisted living home and she wraps up all the loose ends concerning every character . The last survivor of the great San Francisco quake; Vera re caps the years after this event.
The main story evolves around the few days prior to the quake, the quake and the year following. Edgarian develops rich characters in the story and you really yearn to know how each faired after the main plot ends. Vera of course being the center character and the main focus.
A tragic coming of age story in many ways but yet Vera is also a survivor and a strong young lady who overcomes life's punches.
I enjoyed this. Thanks Scribner and Good reads for this opportunity.

This book had a few of my favorite things: Historical Fiction, a "Coming of Age" story and a setting in my favorite city, San Francisco. It is very hard to imagine the devastation and destruction of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake & fire. This book gives you a good look into the tragedy and difficulties the citizens of SF faced in the days & months following the earthquake.
I thought the beginning of the book was a little slow and I was trying to get all of the characters (real & fictional) straight. Once the earthquake hit, the story picked up and I had a hard time putting it down.
This book was chosen for me by daughter for my "Surprise Read" for April. This book was a perfect choice for this month was 116 years ago of the Great Earthquake.

Was not a fast read for me.  The author did a great job at detail, but was too much at times.

“You can’t always know in the moment who will leave a mark on your heart.” - Vera.

This book is set in San Francisco during 1906 when it was leveled by both a disastrous earthquake and a fire. We follow Vera Johnson, a fifteen-year-old who is the illegitimate daughter of Rose, the notorious proprietor of San Francisco’s most legendary bordello and ally to the city’s corrupt politicians. Vera has grown up straddling both the world of the madam’s alluring sphere and scant morality and the debt ridden domestic life of the family paid to raise her. On the morning of the quake, Vera’s worlds collide. Among the shattered city and the injured, Vera and her sister Pie, are cast adrift. Vera disregards societal norms and prejudices and begins to imagine a new kind of life, and tries to navigate her way beyond disaster.

I found out about this book a couple months ago when the cover and synopsis caught my eye. I loved the setting of San Francisco during the years of the big earthquake and enjoyed reading about Vera and her family’s survival. I also was interested in the historical aspects of this novel dealing with corruption, bordellos, and the lavishly rich in San Francisco. Overall, this is a great story that I found to be pretty unique! There are definitely some heart-breaking moments as Vera deals with some hard truths and strained relationships. I do wish that this book went a little further into certain relationships and dug deeper into the emotions surrounding them so there was more of an attachment to some characters, but I was also able to connect to the characters as-is too. I would definitely recommend this book to those who love historical fiction, and/or following characters through the aftermath of a tragic natural disaster.
