Grrr. What a tease. Just when it was about to get good, it ends. Darn you, Nalini! ;-)

Thankfully, hints of this story developing (as a secondary storyline) have been dropped throughout the Guild Hunter books I've read. And I sure as heck want to hear more about this sexy Cajun vamp (Janvier)!

This is a precursor to Ash and Janvier's book, and it's referenced in the initial Guild Hunter book. I wouldn't read this without reading the first book or so in the guild hunter series because it will make no sense otherwise.

Angels’ Pawn is the 3rd and last prequel to Angels’ Blood. Like the other 2 it’s actually best to read them after Angels’ Blood – if you’re afflicted with OCD and have a pathological need not to miss anything. I kind of wish I didn’t – have OCD – because none of the prequels, Angels’ Pawn included has whetted my appetite to jump back into the series with the second full length Guild Hunter novel.

Angels’ Pawn was just OK; and the relationship between Janvier and Ashwini was not enthralling enough to get me excited about seeing them re-visited in the Guild Hunter #7. J & A are frenemies – Janvier is a sexy Cajun 245 year old vampire who on a fairly regular basis manages to piss off an angel who then contracts the Guild to round his ass up. The contracts generally go to Ashwini and they have a friendly, flirtatious rivalry going on – Janvier really has the hots for her, and Ashwini has some deep dark, “I’ve been hurt before” secrets so she can’t get involved with anyone, least of all an almost immortal vampire who will only see her as a plaything (since compared to vampires humans live about as long as a pet rat).

When Angels’ Pawn opens Ashwini is on a hunt; but Janvier isn’t the target – in fact she rather thinks she needs his help. The Guild’s been hired by a nasty angel named Nazarach to clear up a bit of vampire intrigue – but being as he’s a big, scary (psycho) angel; he’s going to want a piece of Ashwini – who’s smart enough to pop in on Janvier – and for the price of one “personal favor” owed a some future point in time; Ashwini has herself a work partner and bodyguard to ensure she doesn’t become angelchow. There’s some OK mystery and action and some lukewarm UST between J & A. I hope this isn’t their A game and that things heat up a bit more in the main series.

Enjoyed it - wish they get their own book!!.... But I dont know how or why this is listed as the prequel, you really have to read book 1 to understand the relationship between angel-vampire-hunter.

I read this in the Angel's Flight compilation.

This novella was focused on Ashwini, another Guild Hunter who is also hunter born. She doesn't have the scent talent. Instead she can hear the thoughts and emotions of the people she touches. She gets into a contract with the angel Nazarach who we know from the series is one cruel angel. She asks the vampire Janvier. He's mentioned a couple times through the series as a love interest for Ash. They seem to have a love-hate relationship but she is also the only one who hunts him when he pisses off an angel.

This was not much of a love story. It had more action and showed a lot of the angel and vampire politics. But there is that chemistry between the two that makes you want to just say get on with it already. She needs to get over no dating vampires thing because they could definitely be good together. Now I want to know what has made Ash so haunted. There are little hints but nothing is ever fully explained. I'm hoping that as the series progresses we learn more about her particular back story.

** Read as part of [b:Angels' Flight|9738582|Angels' Flight (Guild Hunter, #0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 3.5)|Nalini Singh|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1311894951s/9738582.jpg|14627662].

I would suggest buying this as part of the Angels' Flight instead of individual due to the price of the single title. It seams high for such a short novella.

This one we get a closer look at Ashwini, Elena’s Guild Hunter colleague and Janvier. It’s a little moment in time with these two; before they get their full Novel [b:Archangel's Shadows|17409835|Archangel's Shadows (Guild Hunter, #7)|Nalini Singh|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1394162943s/17409835.jpg|24252401].

In Archangel’s Shadow they mentioned this moment this assignment briefly and it made me want to find out more on the backstory of Ash and Janvier’s relationship.

Ash is smart, tough, and can kick ass. She also has some “talent” or a curse, depending on who looks at it. Janvier is the ban in her existence. She’s hunted him in the past, but here he stands by her side for a Guild assignment. He has a talent for making friends with anybody.

Angels’ Pawn focuses on the action rather then the romance. The chemistry is their and we Sigh does a wonderful job giving us a taste of, Ash and Janvier's, budding teasing flirtatious relationship. As for the world it's terrifying and riveting.

I loved Angels’ Pawn.
