Let's use this as a teachable moment. I'm pretty sure that's what Obama was talking about when he used that phrase. I'm pretty sure he was talking about zombie media.

I'd like to throw in a couple things that we do not need in zombie/horror narratives anymore. These are twists or plot moves that we have seen, digested, and we're ready to move on.

1. The Badass Is Actually A Huge Wuss
In this book, it's the 90's action movie star who turns out to be mostly unwilling to fight zombies. What a twist. As an alternative, what about the action hero who's out of his goddamn mind and is thrilled to finally be living the dream? Or the action hero who is an old man with a gut and wants to kick ass? How about any alternative to this?

2. Girls Are Better At Fighting Than Boys
It's not that this can't happen in the book, but let's calm down with the patting ourselves on the back WITHIN THE NARRATIVE. "Look, I wrote a comic where a girl is good at using knives, and boys are not good at that! #YesAllWomen" Gimme a break. Just write the characters who kick ass, and let Jezebel or some shit talk about how you did a good job. Let's stop taking story breaks to highlight how progressive we are.

3. The Real Threat Is...US!
No, goddamn it. The real threat is fucking zombies. Duh. Okay? Duh. Enough of the stories where it's the darkness within us all that ruins everything. How 'bout a story where people are kinda normal and fight zombies? Again, I don't think this is totally inaccurate, but it's a story that's been done A LOT and one we don't need to tell over and over.

4. A Haircut And A Body Style = A Character
These characters are virtually indistinguishable in terms of their likes and dislikes, their personalities, all that shit. Fat Guy, Average Guy, Smart Slim Guy, Hot Girl, Younger Also Hot Girl.

5. We Found The Cure!
Many a zombie tale ends with the highly-unlikely stumbling upon a cure for the outbreak. And rarely are these cures interesting. It's not like, I don't know, eating part of Michael Jackson's corpse somehow cures things. It's not like licking a cat's butthole cures zombie and there's one weird pervert who is immune, and that's the only explanation and the government is trying to get him to explain, but he's reluctant. It's some weird chemical thing that just doesn't matter, and they might as well say, "Eh, fuck it." We don't need the cure in every zombie story. And if there is a cure, we don't need our unlikely heroes to stumble upon it.

Fanboys vs Zombies is exactly what it sounds like. A group of geeks join forces when San Diego Comic Con is overrun by zombies! Any die-hard fans of zombie culture will absolutely love this volume (and I’m sure the rest of the series!) I wish the title reflected some of the badass female characters we also meet in this graphic novel, like Amanda, the sick amazing young female (who takes no shit) that I fell in love with from the first page.
Heaps of gory explosive fun. No idea how I haven’t seen this talked about before, but picked up the second volume at an overstock-bookstore and knew I needed to find the first volume. Read in one sitting.
Love the characters, the artwork was fun, bold and colourful. I want to print off all the pages and stick them on my walls!
Hadn’t realised this is the same author as Blackbird, which was my most anticipated graphic novel of this year! I pre-ordered it and it’s sitting at home just waiting to be read. I will not hesitate to pick it up now.
If you’re sulking over the end of I Hate Fairyland, or are a nerd and a lover of zombies; this is definitely one you need to pick up!

Synopsis

Oh no! It’s the Zombie Apocalypse! But, who is better prepared for it than the fans attending this year’s famous Comic Con? This crazy and often times satirical comic is a must read for all fans of zombies and comic books.

Fanboys vs. Zombies, vol. 1 by Sam Humphries and Jerry Gaylord

★★★★½
Genre: Horror/Satire/Comic Book
Release Date: January 2013
Source: Half Price Books – Bought
On My Shelf: Yes

I actually enjoyed this comic WAY more than I thought I would. It was inclusive, hilarious, and just downright fun. The first half of this comic was more of a 3.5 stars, but by the second half this story was definitely a solid 4-4.5. There were so many awesome things happening in here that I don’t even know what to praise first. I guess I’ll start by saying that I loved that the female element was included in this story without being *keyword* demeaning. Every single character in this story was a fun blessing, and I adored them all. Humphries develops each one well giving individual personalities to all. Accompanied by Gaylord’s artwork, these characters really shone bright.

And, as they did, I enjoyed so much reading their story about how they survived the Comic Con Zombie apocalypse. I found myself smiling and laughing and eating this comic right up. The vibrant art paired with the interesting and alluring storyline made this a quick read that I couldn’t put down. This story has a bit of everything from laugh out loud moments to suspenseful situations and even a few more endearing ones.

Full of laughs and heart, these characters stole my heart (or maybe ate my heart?) making this an awesome start to a series that I can’t wait to read more of. I highly recommend this one! I just ordered the next 3 volumes in this series, so I’m full-on invested.

This was even more fun than I’d thought. A true zombie apocalypse story taken in some interesting new directions. The artwork was fun and vibrant and the characters really bounced off of each other. It was also fun seeing all the zombies wearing various cosplay outfits.

I just wasn't that into it. The love triangle and dialogue isn't interesting and just annoys me.
