This is my first Christopher Golden novel, and it did not disappoint. I was hooked after the first few chapters, and as the story developed and secrets revealed, I could not put the book down. The cover also drew me in with all of it's colors, and the hidden skull motif (which seems to be a favorite of Golden). This is a story that will haunt you both while reading, and long after the last page is turned.

Main characters have no internal conflict and don't take logical action (i.e. they run into their house during an earthquake; they don't look around even though they think there's someone else in the house).
fast-paced
A disappointing horror thriller from an author I really want to like but just haven't seemed to find his best work yet.
As a thriller, this book hits all the right notes but the horror falls flat. Had this been a mystery thriller I think this could have been an entirely different experience however it isn't and the author, for me, really doesn't deliver on the horror at all.
So much potential with little delivery or memorable moments. Most definitely not the 'high concept horror' it's described as.

This is very similar to Diavola, like nearly the same plot but written by a completely different person.
I liked the plot, though the character writing was a lot of telling and no showing. There was a lot of "they did this sort of banter because they were so in love and best friends" or whatever rather than just letting the dialogue speak for itself. This was still a fast, fun, and eerie book.

I got about 22% into this and I think I'm DNF'ing for now. I haven't had any pull to it to continue. It's rather slow and in parts feels a bit rambling. I've been in a bit of a reading slump, and particularly a thriller/horror slump, and since i have no pull to this currently, it's not helping my ability to pick it up. 3 stars because I can see where this has promise if it pics up
