It was slow, not the worst thing I have read though. I hated that he didn't believe her when she said his grandpa tried to kill her. What an awful husband.

I went into this book almost completely blind. I saw it was a haunted house horror set in Italy and I thought: Yes! But after finishing it: Hell no.
I'm reading horror books published this year to try to predict Goodreads choice awards horror nominees, and this was one of my picks. I'm not happy.
The real horror is the insensitive, annoying rich white American couple, not the demons.

This is definitely a slower pace and the beginning and well into the middle only has occasional and mild haunting elements. The focus is very much on the main characters, their relationship, and their experience moving from the US to Italy. When everything starts to unravel the pace definitely picks up and I really appreciated how it ended.

This one goes a little off the rails in the last 25%, and a couple of the relationship details don't always make emotional sense to me, but I did enjoy Golden's take on the "offer too good to be true" haunted house trope. The audiobook narrators each did an excellent job, but the switch between the two voices could have been a little more seamless with different engineering, I think.
