Parts were repetitive throughout the emote story. The very last end, last chapter was pretty cool. But overall not horrible. But definitely not a fav.

Prompted by a yearning for adventure and a desire to reconnect with family, Tommy and Kate Puglisi accept an incredible offer to travel from Boston to purchase an abandoned home in the Italian town of Becchina for a single Euro.
While Tommy and Kate’s objectives include spending time with Tommy’s grandparents, fixing up their home and making plans to try to revitalize the fading town; strange occurrences within the house and the eventual revelation of its darker religious history eventually lead the both of them to question their decision.
The House Of Last Resort is an entertaining and unsettling novel. The depiction of Becchina and Kate and Tommy’s lifestyle there is appealing and were it not a horror novel, I would have also enjoyed reading about their experiences. Both characters are engaging and while the secondary characters are interesting as well, Tommy and Kate are the primary focus.
Certain scenes within The House Of Last Resort are incredibly tense-particularly more than one trek through the local catacombs-and as adorable as some may appear, the more frightening aspects of rats are also utilized effectively. Mentions of excorcisms and the treatment of those viewed as “afflicted by demons” by members of the Church within Becchina are distressing as well.
Although I was expecting a bit more in terms of frightening happenings within the house, the direction the story took and the religious details provide an intriguing shift in the plot. The ending may seem slightly predictable, but the journey to reach it and its repercussions were quite harrowing.
The House Of Last Resort is also the first audiobook that I’ve listened to that has dual narrators and Marnye Young and Noah Michael Levine both did a fabulous job of not only giving each character distinct voices, but also making Kate and Tommy and their relationship feel very authentic.

This was a fun little haunting kinda story. Had some vibes, had some interesting build up and ideas, but kinda wished we had more time to build the tension up. More happenings, more eerie, more use of the other people and friends around them, some of the american friends coming to visit and either having some experiences or lack of experiences believing that their friends are losing it. I also kinda liked how it ended.
What made me a bit sad was how positively surprised I was by a horror story about a healthy, loving couple with diverse friends that they also have good relationships with. Having a relationship build on mutual respect, love, trust and good communication start to tear at the seam and crumble was a lot more interesting that a couple who kinda already dislike each other and cant communicate their feelings to save their lives in the first place. The conversations they had about him needing her there, and her not being able to, both still trying to hold some space for each other while still feeling let down by the other hit different.

Continuing on my gothic horror set in Italy kick with this new release from Christopher Golden! The audiobook was really good- both narrators were talented and their performances enhanced my enjoyment of this novel. It's a fun read and has some good spooky moments. The story felt rooted in its setting, a feeling that was magnified by the audiobook. I would have liked a little bit more time spent with some of the other characters in the town, but overall, this was an enjoyable and creepy tale. If you have enjoyed this author's other books, or if you enjoy the horror tropes of haunted houses, demonic possession, and small town cults, you may want to pick this one up!
