This review is mostly for myself, but read it if you'd like.
I went into this book expecting it to be creepy. And it almost was. The setting at a run down house that everyone calls The House of Last Resort in a tiny town in Sicily, creepy. Finding out exorcisms were performed in your home, creepy. The catacombs in town, creepy. Finding out there's a buried catacomb under your house where people who couldn't be exorcised were buried, really fucking creepy.
Despite all this, it wasn't creepy. The rats were interesting, but I still don't know if they were plain old rats or demon possessed rats. There wasn't any back story of the annex, the chapel, and the buried catacomb except that they were there. No one ever said anything about priests who died or the people who couldn't be exorcised beyond putting them in the hidden catacomb, or what it was like during that time or anything. The nonno was possessed the whole time and the only thing he did was one thing to Kate?? And then it seemed like the demon just hung around in him or got into one of the rats to get Tommy, I'm not really sure about that part. I just thought there would be more. A description of an actual exorcism would've put it right into that creepy category I was expecting. There was really no big climax, unless that's what the second earthquake was supposed to be. Tommy's end wasn't enough to make up for any of it, and that could have really ended with a bang. I don't regret reading this, but I will immediately forget it.
If you are easily creeped out by religious horror or possession, you might like this a lot better than I did.

Just boring. I hated the characters and the whole thing with wanting to make the catacombs a tourist attraction just didn’t make sense to me.
