3.5 stars. This had all the star players of the game for me; Italy, church scandal, mysterious catacombs…I was primed for a home run, but this one fell short of the fence for me :(. It took a lot of unnecessary time to get going and then was quite predictable.

Around the 70% mark the book just totally lost me and slid into being absurd. It was so slow too for such a short book. I did enjoy the final hit of the ending, but it wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the book.

I think this could have been about 20% shorter, mostly in the beginning. I also think the main couple was insufferable, and that Golden might not know how to write young people and women in particular. But it was interesting enough once you hit the 50% mark. Wouldn’t recommend, but wouldn’t not recommend.
