I want to have liked this more. I absolutely loved the first Tarzan book, but I felt like this sequel fell a little flat. One of the things I enjoyed about Tarzan of the Apes was it's simplicity. This one was all over the place. It felt like several Tarzan short stories strung together. It lacked the cohesion and polish of the original. It started alright with Tarzan and D'Arnot, but that grew old quickly. The "Tarzan as a secret agent" section was terrible. I really enjoyed the section with Tarzan and the Waziri, but things really didn't feel right until Tarzan was [Warning, Spoilers ahead] back at the cabin with Jane. There was some nice resolution with the character of Clayton, but I thought it was a huge mistake to end with Tarzan, Jane and the gang heading back to civilation. Tarzan is only cool in the jungle. It doesn't work otherwise. I'm going to hang in there, because I loved the jungle sections of this book. I just hope they get back to basics soon.

The beginning was slow, but the last six or seven chapters were a rush! Really picked up and got exciting!

impossible physical feats, russian spies, and intense adventures in both the African deserts and jungle abound in the 2nd book in Burroughs' famous Tarzan series!

Very strange, very racist conclusion to part 1 of Tarzan. If you were unsatisfied with the ending of the first one, this will conclude the story more completely, so there's that. I know it sounds like I shouldn't be excited to read the third one, (1 star hello?) but the third one is called Beasts of Tarzan so I'm actually really excited to read it.

It was fairly surprising to me, when I read Tarzan of the Apes for the first time, that Tarzan doesn’t pair up with Jane by the end of the book. Tarzan and Jane are just…always together, in all the adaptations and re-tellings. Edgar Rice Burroughs, however, keeps his readers guessing, and takes two books to get there instead of one Disney movie. :)

This book deals with the lost city of Opar, and countless adventures and exploits of Tarzan. He’s still a free man, unfettered and unmoored, traveling here and there with friends, getting set upon by thugs and shady characters jealous of his masculinity, prowess, and status as a proper gentleman.

It’s true that too many of the women in these stories are attracted to Tarzan. I suppose if I was a high priestess of a lost city that didn’t really have a thriving community and lots of men to choose from, I would fall for Tarzan when I saw him, too.

Okay, let’s be real. I would fall for Tarzan even if there were a hundred other guys in easy reach. It does come across a bit sexist, though, for women to fall for Tarzan at first sight.

In any case, this was an excellent continuation of the Tarzan stories, and tied up some loose ends that I wanted tied.

Fans of adventure stories will love this, of course, and anyone who enjoyed Tarzan of the Apes basically has to also read The Return of Tarzan. Really. You don’t want to end things at the first book.

I still think I enjoyed the first book better. However, this still was a fun one--a little over the top considering the espionage element and such, but still entertaining nonetheless.

I had long planned to pick up the second Tarzan book to see him adjust to civilisation, further develope his relationship with Jane and witness the struggles related to that. That's not really the content of this book, though. It's more action - adventure with hardly any interactions between the ape man and his love interest.

The story I got was still interesting: Tarzan, who had decided not to claim his heritage nor Jane, has various conflicts within the civilized world, takes an exciting job and ends up in the wild again. It's one wild adventure story, which sounds awesome for some but is not what I'm most interested in about Tarzan's story. I loved every bit about Jane's parts of the story, however, and there were some interesting characters in this novel.
How adjusted Tarzan is to the world seems to more influenced by plot convenience than making sense a lot of the time.

I don't think I'll continue the series since the concepts I'm interested in don't seem to be the focus. It would be interesting to see how Jane and Tarzan's marriage turns out, but I'm not much of an adventure book reader so I fear as the series continues I would get less and less out of it.
This was a fun book just not what I wanted and love to read.
