Die Inhaltsangabe erinnerte mich gleich von Anfang an stark an „Mythicaund ich liebe diese Reihe von von P.C. Cast ja über alles, auch wenn ich anfangs etwas zögerlicher war, wegen des Zeitalters (ich bin bis heute kein Fan von historischen Romanen und hatte damals erst recht noch nicht viel davon gelesen und die Bücher aus “Mythica“ die in vergangenen mittelalterlicheren Zeiten spielten, hatten mir auch weniger gefallen). Aber ich mochte bisher noch jedes Buch von P.C. Cast mehr oder weniger und war mehr als gewillt, dem Ganzen eine Chance zu geben.
Zuerst hatte ich das Gefühl bekommen, dass Alex (alias Blonwen, wie sie in dieser Zeit heisst) die Stammesführerin Boundica betrügen würde und ihr wirklich einfach das Medaillon wegnimmt, was aber nicht geschah, was dann für mich auch schon überraschend gewirkt hatte.
Im Allgemeinen blieb für mich vieles unvorhersehbar (es gab zum Beispiel ja auch schon verschiedene Lösungen zu ihrem Problem: bleibt sie dort oder nimmt sie ihren Typen mit in ihre Zeit) und das Ende hat mich dann auch echt gut überrascht und war auch mehr als zufriedenstellend.
Da ich, wie bereits gesagt, nicht viel Ahnung von Kelten hatte (hat sich mit dem Studium von Englisch, etwas geändert, als Altenglisch durchgenommen wurde, aber da es schon wieder ein Weilchen her war, seit ich das Buch gelesen habe, kenne ich auch die Details nicht mehr), habe ich keine Ahnung, ob die Gegebenheiten gut dargestellt wurden oder alles nur erfunden war. Ich denke, es kam zwar noch ziemlich realistisch herüber (mit Ausnahme der Götter und Geister natürlich).
Wenn man schon von den Geistern spricht: Ich fand diesen Aspekt der Geschichte sehr gut. Die Geister haben ihr stets geholfen, sich in der fremden Zeit zurechtzufinden und wussten über sie Bescheid und so war zum Glück nicht jeder völlig im Unklaren, wer sie ist, was vielen unnötigen Dialog sparte.
Auch manche kleineren Details gefielen mir gut. So zum Beispiel der Sprachchip, der zur Verständigung hilft. In den meisten anderen Büchern scheinen die Leute ohne Probleme in die Vergangenheit zu gehen und können sich bestens mit allen unterhalten, ohne das erklärt wird, wie es genau funktioniert.
Auch wurde natürlich wieder die kleine amerikanische Stadt Tulsa erwähnt, was ich einfach, wie schon einige Male erwähnt, richtig süss finde. Ich finde das ein tolles Detail, was sie allein schon dadurch herausstehen lässt.
Die Tatsache, dass zu jedem Zeitpunkt, in dem sie die Kraft der Erde benötigt auch der richtige Baum da ist, finde ich dann aber etwas speziell. Ein Deus ex Machina in Baumform und das gleich mehrfach. Man kann ja vom glücklichen Zufall sprechen (vielleicht besteht der gesamte Wald ja nur aus Rowanbäumen), aber das wirkt eher etwas unecht.
Alles in allem ist es aber ein tolles Buch, mit einer sehr interessanten Handlung. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass mich das Buch so hineinziehen könnte, weil es um Kelten ging. Ein bisschen erinnert es mich an Mythica mit anderen Gottheiten, also kann ich es auch nur an Fans der Reihe weiterempfehlen. Ich gebe dem Buch dafür fünf Sterne.

I thought The Avenger was a refreshing change from P.C. Cast’s normal niche of writing, but I also thought her writing somewhat improved when she wrote adult characters.
The Celts were well developed and well described as Celts, though sometimes you could mistake them for being modern, but hey, it’s hard to write like you are from 60 AD, when you obviously have never spoken to them before.
I thought the plot was well thought out, there was a point to the story and it was also interesting enough to pull me in, and to make me keep on reading!
There was a lot of descriptions which I thought was great, and essential. The fact that it is mainly set in the past made it more interesting that were descriptions.. it was cool to find out more about that certain past.
I thought the main character, Alex, had an okay personality. She seemed to be a bit self absorbed, but it’s hard not to be when you have a task to do, and you are in such a new world! I also thought she could have had a few more things going for her. Okay so she has red hair and can speak to ghosts, but you don’t really get told much more about her! I like my characters richly described and interesting, so sue me!
The overall writing was pretty satisfactory as well. I don’t think it was bad, but it wasn’t awesome, just good enough.

All in all, I think I enjoyed the book, most elements were met and I believe the book was pretty good. However Alex could have been described and developed more. Caradoc I thought was a nice character, more developed than Alex, and he looked pretty good too!

This was good fun. I thought the book didn’t take itself too seriously and was better for it. I loved the time travel aspect of the story and enjoyed the 60 AD setting. I was fascinated by the history of that period and would definitely be interested in reading more about Boudica. It was much more spiritual than I expected it to be but in a pleasantly surprising way. I enjoyed all the magical aspects and the drawing of power from the land – but some may find too much detail is included as it slowed down the story in some parts. I did find myself really interested in it though.
I also found myself rather taken with Caradoc – the Druid Alex meets in the past. Their story is really sweet and is my favourite aspect of the book. I had a good idea how the story would end but I enjoyed the journey there. In fact I thought it got really exciting towards the end and I raced through the last part of the book.
This is an adult book though so there are a few scenes that would not be appropriate for younger readers. Cast's House of Night series is aimed at older teens and although this is a different kind of story I think those fans will most likely find something to enjoy here too.

The Avenger has both good and bad sides. Nevertheless, the positive things outweigh the shortcomings in and make it a compelling read.

RECOMMENDATION: Those who love historical/time travel romance will most probably find The Avenger a fast and entertaining read which is hard to put down. Also, despite being a part of series, The Avenger is in fact, as well as the other Time Raiders books, a book which can be read as a stand-alone.

3 out of 5 stars. I finished that book yesterday ... it was good. I did like it but it was not my fave book by P. C. Cast, I was kind of disappointed in how it didn't really break at all from what she normally writes. Which can be a good and bad thing. =0/
