This is a short read but beautifully written. The book is actually split into 3 parts, the first 2 of which are the story Kitchen, and the 3rd of which is a story called Moonlight Shadow. Both stories explore grief, loneliness, and connection, but this book isn't depressing, rather it's hopeful and beautiful. I can see myself coming back to it in the future in times of grief.

Yoshimoto’s prose is so soft.

I can’t think of a better word to describe it. It leads you gently by the hand, waxing poetic without being obscure, showing raw feeling without being crass. I really enjoyed this little gem; although it was extremely short, it didn’t leave me wanting for more, because it was so satisfying.

The book contains two novellas. First one is "Kitchen" , the second one is "Moonlight Shadow".

Both novellas are about love, loss and bereavement and how people find acceptance and peace in their grief, through small, kind and heartfelt gestures.

The prose and the characters might seem simple, but that's really not the case. Yoshimoto writes about the emotions we feel after experiencing the death of a loved one and yet leaves the reader with a sense of hope at the end.

A beautiful book, that I definitely recommend, but do keep the trigger warnings in mind.
