This story is so intense and intimate and incredibly well written. It is told from the dual perspectives of Belen and Luciano and takes place over the span of 10 years. Their relationship is so amazing, because it truly does start out as two cousins who grew up as best friends. But it gives an interesting look at how feelings can evolve and change over time. As this two grew older their feelings became more romantic even though there was absolutely no reason for it. This story is a true testament for you can’t help who you love. This is not your typical romance book and I applaud Mara for putting the story out there.

I think it is so important to move outside of your comfort zone when reading and this book certainly helps with that. Maldeamores or being lovesick is something that is truly believed in within many Latin cultures and I love that this book explores that. Belen and Luciano love each other so much it hurts and the fact that they are relate only makes it worse. I found Belen’s story line so fascinating because she truly believes there is something wrong with her. She hates herself for how she feels and I think that speaks to how so many people feel when they love someone they think they shouldn’t.

For his part Luciano tries and mostly succeeds to resist Belen. I won’t say whether or not they end up together. But what I will say is this story is a crazy emotional ride. I was never sure of how I was supposed to feel and whether or not these two should be together. Overall I did enjoy the book and I even read the sequel! But after reading both books so quickly I definitely needed something light and fun! Like I said before this book definitely isn’t for everyone, but I’m glad I gave it a chance.
