A beautifully written, atmospheric short from the point of view of a farmer's wife during WWI. Her traumatised brother has been demobbed because of his injuries, and his friend, who lost his leg in the war, comes to help on the farm. It transpires that the two are lovers and the story is really about the family coming to terms with several new realities, including Bethey's husband having to face up to his own flaws rather than blustering. Vivid, short but absorbing, and hopeful in the face of human tragedy and human stupidity.
