Ontluisterend boek over hoe de vroege christenen de oude Romeinse en Griekse cultuur, denkwijze, geschriften, tempels en beelden verwoest hebben.
Dat bij de culminatie hiervan, in de 6e eeuw, als ook het lesgeven over niet christelijke ideeën verboden werd ook de duistere middeleeuwen aanbreken is geen toeval. Nixey trekt niet voor niets parallellen met de IS verwoestingen van alles dat geen islam is: de eerste verwoesting van Palmyra in Syrië vond plaats door christelijke knokploegen.
Ze krijgt overigens flinke kritiek vanwege selectief gebruik van bronmateriaal en doelredenatie naar het beeld dat ze wil schetsen: de verwoestende en intolerante vroege christenen en de tolerante houding van de Romeinse overheersers en hun rijke godenwereld.

An interesting read, highlighting the beginning of the European 'Dark Ages'. The first and last chapters are excellent bookends to this era, but the chapters in between mesh into confusing anecdotes of the events. To someone particularly interested in hearing about snippets of what happened in classical Europe at this time, I'd rec the book, but it fell short of being a good read for me.

i wanted to remain even-handed but i have to give this one high marks. it is a polemic, but a damned good one. merciless! well-paced. doesn't concede to sensationalism. chapters 3 (Wisdom is Foolishness), 5 (These Deranged Men), 10 (To Drink From the Cup of Devils) and 16 (A Time of Tyranny and Crisis) were especially illuminating.

The book is more of a travelogue than a comprehensive history of the period. Many of the anecdotes and observations are quite good, and Nixey has a talent for bringing the historical scenes figures to life, but if you’re looking for a deeper examination as to why Christianity came to dominate the Roman Empire or how that whole process unfolded historically than this will leave you somewhat disappointed.

This book is incredibly informative. It shares a lot of information about Christianity's impact on Rome and "pagan" religions that is not often covered anywhere else. I felt that the writing was clear and concise and it seemed like the book was written at a level that most people could understand.
