So while the book is absolutely nothing like the musical of the same name, I for one really enjoyed it. Did I like all of the characters? No. But I found it an intriguing read and while long, I found myself wanting to get to the ending and am now looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
It wasn't what I expected, but I am glad I have read it.

Reading after seeing the first movie , probably wouldn’t have understood the world had I read before hand and honestly I might like the movie better which is rare
I picked up this book at the airport on a whim, just looking for an easy read. I didn't know much about it, or about the musical, but I had always been intrigued by it. I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by it. It was far darker, more intense and had more thematic depth than I had anticipated. It completely twisted everything I knew about the setting and characters from Baum's 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and gave it all a new perspective. In essence, this book was a meditation on the nature of good and evil. It flipped all of my previous assumptions of the good and evil in the well known characters from 'The Wizard of Oz'.
The whole book was very in medias res. New topics, characters, ideas and places were introduced without any explanation or proper description. I have seen from other reviews that many people disliked that about the book, but I really loved it. My lack of knowledge or understanding of what was happening made me more interested in the plot, and gave me the freedom to apply my own meaning and analysis to characters, themes, etc. This book was one of those (rare) cases where none of the questions were truly answered, and it is up to the reader to interpret it one way or another, which is why I like to think of it as a mediation rather than an analysis. I found this incredibly refreshing.
The only reason why I am not giving this book five stars is that I found the first half of the book more enticing than the second half. Although I still enjoyed the second half, I was not as interested or excited about it as I had been for the first half of the book. Overall, however, it was a great read.

Meh, it was hard for me even to rate this one. I knew going in it was different than the play; I actually looked forward to that. However, I wasn't expecting it to drag on and on, with many times, I'm super skimming the page.
I won't recommend it to friends and much preferred the musical version storyline to the book. A reader blasphemy!
