interesting and thought provoking, but also very confusing and dark. I knew what would happen in the end, but I found myself hoping for a different ending.

A weird, wild reimagining of the Wizard of Oz that is ultimately about failure and how not choosing is a choice. Our wicked witch, here, remains often on the sidelines and leans away from the larger goings-ons but those events still suck her in.

For fans of the musical, you'll be mostly surprised! The two works are about as different as things can be, considering one is the adaptation of the other. Really, in just about every conceivable way, excepting character names, the stories are completely different.

It's a sometimes frustrating but always compelling read. I most likely won't be reading more of this series, but it's quite gargantuan what Maguire does here with the world of Oz, building it, or rather rebuilding it, from scratch to tell a wild story about political upheaval and power.

This has not aged well. It drags, political, sexual and violent. It has merit but not the easiest read.

While this original book behind the wildly popular musical and film adaptation is narratively less cohesive with many scattered and underdeveloped plot points, it does make for more expansive universe building and exploration into the grittier themes of a person's core nature and destiny, good versus evil and how mass ignorance breeds the tyranny of social institutions, philosophically engaging me immensely in this creative reimagination of a beloved classic. I will definitely read more of this author's other works.

honestly only read it because people were talking about how crazy it was and was kinda disappointed, it was entertaining and really not that crazy of a book but i expected more than just historical classism and racism to be defining points in oz but alas it was written by an old white guy so checks out. would i recommend it no was it something to feed my wicked obsession atm yes.

I definitely love the movie and musical better… This book was very interesting.. BUT with that said I feel this book gets low ratings because it is more on the dark side and the movie/musical is fluffed up. The book touches more on hard life like political, fascism, populism, propaganda, and the scapegoating. It also touches on talk of suicide, drowning of a baby, murder, torture, implied rape, infidelity, and queer phobia. For those that don’t know, many classic Disney movies are based on darker and more violent fairytale stories than what is portrayed in the films. (Cinderella, The little Mermaid and Snow White)

I couldn't finish this. It was so confusing and I felt like I was reading for school. I may pick it up here and there since I hate not finishing a book, but I don't want to waste my summer on it.
