I had really looked forward to reading this, and after reading some less than mediocre books recently, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this one was actually good! This one's a short novella, and I think the shortness of it works in favor of it by not dragging the plot on for agonizingly long. However, I do think that the buildup and the "oh no something is wrong" could've been just a little longer. The plot itself is very good though, and a joy to read! I've never read the original short story this is based on (I will one day) so I can't comment on how this does as a re-imagining.

There are a few things that keep the book from being a 5-star one though:
- The narration is in first person and jumps a little between tenses which is jarring.
- Around the halfway point there's starting to be hints at a connection between two Creepy Things™, but then after being hinted at it's immediately confirmed. You don't need to show AND tell for the audience to get the hint, please have some faith in us.
- SPOILER: I think leaving the fate of the main characters vague would've been a LOT better than the "nah it's fine they were safe all along" that we got.

All this aside, it's a fun and intriguing story that's also a relatively quick read!
