I have been meaning to read this book for years but have never picked it up. I finally did and I’m kind of disappointed that I’ve only read it now, after watching the show. I enjoyed reading the book and I was blown away by just how well the series portrayed it. However, their similarities make it difficult for me to decide how much I enjoyed the actual writing. I question if I had only read the book whether I would have found the timeline and chapters strange. Sometimes they will have one thought and it will last 5 pages and at other points massive plot lines will occur within just 2. Overall, I do still love to read about their relationship and I enjoyed Sally Rooney’s writing style so a solid 3/5 stars from me.

This book crawls up and rattles around in your soul. It wasn't an enjoyable read, but it's a story that resonated with me.

The prose is heavily character driven, so it often feels like you fall into the protagonist's mind with little sense of the world around them. It's a bit like being trapped in a bad dream where the dark corners of your subconscious keep floating up.

I thought I could anticipate the character arcs clear as day, and then—I started to run out of pages. I grew more and more concerned as the remaining page count whittled down. Then it was suddenly over. The ending felt like being forced to get off the train early, and now—I'll never know if it made it to the station.

***

I can't even decide if I like Rooney's writing style. However, I'm pretty sure this book altered my brain chemistry, so here you go, 5★.

Beautiful book, read after the seeing the TV show multiple times which probably impacts the rating. Unconsciously read the whole book in an Irish accent.
