Love the concept of this book, but the story didn't deliver. I found myself getting disinterested quite a few times.

Practical, unassuming Jane Shoringfield has done the calculations, and decided that the most secure path forward is this: a husband, in a marriage of convenience, who will allow her to remain independent and occupied with meaningful work. Her first choice, the dashing but reclusive doctor Augustine Lawrence, agrees to her proposal with only one condition: that she must never visit Lindridge Hall, his crumbling family manor outside of town. Yet on their wedding night, an accident strands her at his door in a pitch-black rainstorm, and she finds him changed. Gone is the bold surgeon, and in his place is a terrified, paranoid man—one who cannot tell reality from nightmare, and fears Jane is an apparition, come to haunt him.

By morning, Augustine is himself again. But Jane knows something is wrong at Lindridge Hall, and with the man she has bound her safety to. Set in a dark-mirror version of post-war England, Starling crafts a new gothic horror from the bones of the beloved canon. This Crimson Peak-inspired story assembles, then upends, every expectation set in place by Shirley Jackson and Rebecca, and will leave readers shaken, desperate to begin again as soon as they finish.

Thank you, St. Martin’s Press for sponsoring this Goodreads giveaway giving me the chance to read The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling!

First let me start by saying I love the cover! It’s unique, so it stands out! And second WOW talk about creepy! In the beginning you do not know how crazy things are going to get (well you do now cause I just told you) but by then you’re stuck! You won’t be able to put it down! When you look around the room wondering if you heard or saw something out of the corner of your eye, you know the depth and devotion put in by the author was wonderful to read. I liked that this book could surprise me. I didn’t expect the twists and oh so creepy moments! This was my first book by Caitlin Starling and I look forward to reading more by her. Outstanding book! Happy reading everyone!
“There-a movement in the doorway, low, a young boy’s head. She heard a wracking cough. A whisper plea.”

I didn’t hate this book, but I had one problem with it that honestly ruined my enjoyment. I just could not understand the main character’s motivation. I mean, she goes through ALL THAT for…..a man she barely knows who keeps lying directly to her face, when the option of not having to deal with any of it is a very very viable option given the circumstances. I just cannot rationalize why she did all that she did. That just really really took me out of the story so I had an hard time caring about what was going on. Otherwise it wasn’t bad, just mediocre, but I did enjoy the gothic, haunted house vibes.
