Laaaame. Booooo. Tomato tomato tomato. Two thumbs down. Feels like a story you'd read in your 6th grade literature text book except WAY too long. No real lessons learned. No major developments. Nothing keeping you on your toes.

This book is the definition of a 3-star read. I didn't feel any particular way about it. The story of two girls drifting apart did hit very close to home, but I didn't get emotional throughout the book. I did like that the story is essentially about Cassie, but told from Julia's POV as she drifts apart from Cassie but still remains distantly connected to her. Overall, this book was very neutral. I did not hate it, but it was nothing spectacular. It was just a mildly depressing coming-of-age novel, so if that's your thing then get at it.

Claire Messud writes this story of adolescent friendship and fracture with such precision and depth. I could see the town, the quarry, and the brave fronts of young girls while also seeing their incremental change and growth apart.
