A cat & mouse war book, different than the rest. I want more of Aefe & Caduan! Also why do we have to hear about "children dying" every 10 pages. We get it!

It is such a rare thing when the final book in a series exceeds the second. Mother of Death and Dawn was the perfect ending to The War of Lost Hearts Trilogy. The last book set this one up to absolutely soar. It was heartbreaking, it was emotional, it was exciting, and yes- I cried.

I loved the pacing in the first quarter of the book. It finally felt in line with what I was looking for in the first two. HOWEVER. Things took a turn for the worst for me after the half way point. The pacing felt incredibly slow at some points and really jumbled and rushed in others. Around the 60% mark it felt like I was reading 17 stories in one book! This last book could’ve been split into three and THAT could’ve been the trilogy.

I DID enjoy the morally grey-ness of the characters. I feel like most character development in books like this are on an upward trend but this book does a good job of showing us all the messiness of a person without any guarantee that you’re going to end up liking them in the end.

I hate to say it but at a certain point, I really just wanted it to be over.
Because of that, around the 75% mark I just stopped reading, took a break for over a week, and STILL didn’t want to come back to it. I skipped ahead to the last 2 chapters and honestly don’t feel like I missed a thing. The ending was incredibly beautiful and tender, though.

I honestly can’t say that I would recommend this series to anyone after “finishing” book 3. I think the slavery aspect is way too detailed to feel like a fantasy novel and this really made it a rough read. The pacing and density being off almost the entire time only adds to my reasoning.

3/5 stars

I felt relieved after finishing this book. I can now read a different one.

Almost dnf'd but I kinda liked the plot and the world is great. Good thing I liked the ending. My problem is there's too much happening but no emotional build up with the characters. I haven't feel any attachment to them (except Aefe my girl 😭) and there's not even chemistry between the main characters.

Compared to the first two books in the series, this one was much harder to get through, both physically and emotionally. However, that doesn’t make the stories or journey any less interesting. It is everything I ever wanted from Tisaanah and Max, even if the journey was long and brutal. I feel like this series puts ills of the world, like slavery, war, colonization, etc. and puts it in a context that shows it in multiple aspects. And I love seeing the main characters learning about themselves as they navigate these issues. The world feels so full and alive. I’m kind of sad to leave it.

the editing in this book could be better, but the story and characters are just SO good that i was able to pretty easily look past that!

Too much trauma was happening in this book. Felt like there was not much plot other then trauma.
