My experience with the second book was subpar compared to the first one, I so had braced myself for a painfully slow (700 pages!) process of dragging myself towards the ending. But I was pleasantly surprised by how fast I flew through the pages. My main complaint for the second book was the unrelenting onslaught of angst and tragedy that made it so exhausting to read, and while this one still had its fair share of death and misery, the bittersweet moments of reprieve woven in between hit the sweet spot to be compelling. And most of all the author was able to present war so realistically, that there are no true villains. I understood everyone’s own reasons for their less than ideal decisions (except Nura, I hate her); I wanted to hate Aefe for supporting Caduan’s mass destruction, but she honestly deserved so much more from the worlds that have failed her over and over. I’m glad they got closure at the end.
