Beautifully written. A book I truly enjoyed reading. But if you're not a fan of long descriptive sentences and little action, avoid it.
Mutlu son yok.
Kitap boyunca mutlu bir son aradım. Bu kadar kederin, yalnızlığın kalp kırıklığının ve silikliğin ardından Edith'in bunu hakettiğini düşünmüştüm. Bu mutlu sonunda bir erkekle olacağına karar kılmıştım.David'i ona layık görmedim adam öncelikle evliydi. Ya da bunun nikah günü terkettiği o kişi ile olacağınıda. Mr Neville ile belki bir şeyler yakalar diye hayal ettim.Ama bence kendi mutluluğu kendinde arayarak en doğru kararı vermiş oldu. Her ne kadar yalnız da olsa Edith evlendiğinde aşk arayacak birisi. Mr Neville ise ona bir addan başka hiçbir şey sunmuyor. Sadakat konu bile değil.
Kitap gerçekten çok güzeldi. Keder hüzün ve umutsuzluk doluydu, Aynı Edith gibi. Hotel Du Lac'a kaçmaya gelmişti, kitap ilerledikçe bu kaçışın gerçekteştiğini de görüyoruz, ama asla kurtulamıyor.
Kitapta en çok hoşuma giden şey Edith'in ve Mr Neville'in yaptığı karakter analizleriydi. Her bireyi sanki yıllardır onunla yaşıyormuş gibi tanıma imkanı veriyordu. Diğer insanların yaşamlarına adım atıyoruz onları yaşıyoruz bir nevi. Kitap Edithin gözünden anlatılsada gene bir mesafe var.Yavaş denemez belki Edith'in karakteri kitaba sinmiştir.

I remember reading this when I was much younger and although I recall a sense of enjoyment I wasn’t able to remember any details of the story (apart from the protagonist describing her observations of fellow hotel guests). Glad I revisited it. This time round there was a growing sense of annoyance with Edith although (without spoilers) she redeems herself. I don’t remember feeling annoyed the first time so perhaps this is how we ourselves change over time! Must see the movie now (missed that altogether!)
I am a sucker for books about writing though (even though in this case it appears to be about procrastination and not getting around to writing - that does seem to resonate with me somewhat)

I first read this about 25 years ago and now remember what I liked about it then; the setting of the hotel by the lake and meeting the characters staying there, but it felt like historical fiction to me (story set in the 1950s or so?). Well, reading this in 2021 it definitely reads like historical fiction, only there are some pointers that it is set in the early 1980s which really doesn't make sense (there is a reference that Edith Hope, the 39 year old protagonist, supposedly looks like Princess Anne - born in 1950?), so that makes the premise of the entire story slightly ludicrous.
But aside from the anachronistic behaviours, attitudes and dress codes, I very much enjoyed revisiting Hotel du Lac making it extra special by reading it on the train to the actual Hotel du Lac in Vevey, Switzerland, and getting a short guided tour by the concierge who told me about the hotel's history and what had been changed since the writing of the novel. So great to "meet one of the main characters" (i.e. the Hotel) of the novel in real life.

I struggled, but it was me, not the book. Just not my cup of tea.
3.5. Rounding up. As others have noted, the language and feel of this book seem older than the 1980s... I got Kate Chopin and Edith Wharton vibes. Definitely an atmosphere/character study book as opposed to a plot-driven page-turner.

1. Es un libro escrito en los 80 y ambientado en los 80 que parece escrito en los 40-50 y ambientado en los 40-50. El mundo en esa época ya no era como Anita Brookner lo describe. Si quieres hacerlo así, tan outdated, tan desfasado, haz una novela histórica. No es ilegal.
2. No soporto cuando lo que piensan, dicen o hacen los personajes resulta imposible de trasladar a la vida real. Nadie habla así, nadie es así. El libro peca de una falta de verosimilitud apabullante.
3. Ostras, qué duro es leer obras sobre temas tan delicados como las relaciones tóxicas, la infidelidad y la falta de autoestima escritas por mujeres que no son feministas y que incluso guardan una profunda misoginia interna. Me da igual que fueran los 80, hay autoras muy anteriores a Anita Brookner que no escribían con ese cierto tufo a resquemor y desprecio por las mujeres.
Todo ello ha hecho para mí de este libro una lectura tediosa, lenta, redundante, aburrida y, por todo ello, desesperante. La prosa elegante no compensa para mí lo demás.
