It is short and interesting in an abstract way but also very slow and meandering.  It is a challenging read.  I powered though and appreciated the book but wouldn’t say I enjoyed it.

Edith acts like the oldest 39 year old woman in the world.

[1984; Booker Prize winner] Loved this book from beginning to end; loved her writing, the characters, the setting, the story. A lovely reading experience.

Beautifully written, small book about a small little life moment where someone finds their own way. Interesting larger than life characters that are actually fragile or broken underneath and less secure than they seem. Weird kind of time zone too. Felt old?

Retreat to a luxury hotel in central Europe and think about your life, future and past. The exquisite food, the beautiful scenery, the art on the wall all act to soothe the common reader (me) into a blissful state of mind.

It is a common motive that I have come across a few times in the past year (grand hotel Europa, magic mountain). After the scene has been set, usually two themes vie for attention: deep introspections versus never ending gossip. This novel mostly contains the latter, but in a pleasant way. So don't expect too much and allow yourself to indulge and enjoy!
