In some respects I liked this better than the first (chronologically) book, I think in part due to so much of the story told from Bush’s not Hornblower’s POV.

Another fine hornblower story. Really liked all the main characters and especially the latter part of the book.

I thought it was very interesting to see Hornblower through the eyes of Lieutenant Bush, instead of through his own. It offered a new look at the character and gave me another chance to measure him up and see what he is like. The book was extremely well paced and kept my attention as I read.

I preferred when the book was from Hornblower's perspective. Otherwise, an amazing sequel that does not disappoint anyone who loved book one.

My fastest read of 2020, I picked this up last Saturday, which would have been my Grampa's 97th birthday. He devoured this series and his shelves were lined with books about ships and sailing, fiction and nonfiction.
Remembering to read this with a critical eye at colonization and the depiction of different cultures. You can chuckle at the absurdity of the British sense of superiority of the era. Severely enjoyable the details of life on the sea, down to the minutiae of ship rigging and sailing. Fabulous drama as well. And for some reason, a small romance thrown in at the end, with a pinch of, "GOD women can be hysterical, huh?"

I didn't think I'd be as captivated by this as I was by the miniseries because of the lack of Dadmiral and Archie, and yet I was. How is it even possible?

Love the historical sea story. Hornblower is a great character. Some scenes dragged on a bit long but overall a great read.
