I try not to read non-fiction because it usually turns my stomach and upsets me, and leaves one feeling powerless to achieve real change or rectify past wrongs.
This book is very upsetting.

Really glad to have read this important and under-told history. Very readable, but Pasternak also tends too far in a paternalistic direction in some of her descriptions.

Powerful. I felt like I shouldn't be shocked by now at learning that this happened, but I still was.
Followed this up with the children's book [b:Healer of the Water Monster|56638626|Healer of the Water Monster|Brian Young|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1610408505l/56638626._SY75_.jpg|81165872] by Brian Young which explores the spiritual impact of these events from a Dine perspective.

Disclaimer: I work as a researcher on the potential health effects on tribal members of chronic exposure to uranium mines and waste features on Navajo Nation.
I thought this was very well-done. It was deeply researched, and, though it was a little bit confusing at times, it does a more-than-admirable job of rolling the history, science, and human stories and context together. It has a bit of a dramatic tone/telling, and I can imagine the the book being told in a "Dateline" type voice. In general, this helps to keep the reader's attention, but sometimes grated on my nerves because it contrasts with the quiet power of Navajo community members' own storytelling.

An incredibly disturbing account of radioactive waste and it’s ill effects on the Navajo people. Rage inducing and well researched

Horrifying history of what we've done to the Navajo people. And to ourselves.
