Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a strange and wild ride through the drug addled mind of Raoul Duke, a stand-in for Thompson himself. He and his lawyer / companion take a trip to Las Vegas in order to find the American Dream. The entire opening chapter sets the tone perfectly from the very first line which may be one of my favorite and most memorable openers.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.

I first read this novel years ago, and it has been one of my favorites ever since. It is both bizarre and insightful at the same time. It's like watching a car-wreck in slow motion. It's horrible and disturbing, yet I cannot take my eyes away.

If you don't have a problem with drug use, and drug culture, then this is a must read from me. If you are squeamish on either of those, then you will hate this.
