4.01 AVERAGE

I loved this book but I felt I could only give it three stars due to the overly simplistic and somewhat racist inclusion of the "Indians" trying to steal land from one of the characters' families. For a book that manages to explore other topics in a more sensitive manner (peer pressure to try drugs, drinking, teen pregnancy), I felt it really failed on this aspect. It even acknowledges that the correct term is Native American, and then the character says she "doesn't care about that sensitive stuff." This plot line didn't have enough of a clear resolution to make this excusable; it could easily leave kids with the impression that Native Americans are out to "steal" land that isn't rightfully theirs. Pretty disappointed.

The whole class is back and moved up to Mr. Terupt's 6th-grade class as a cohort. Everyone's dealing with Stuff: some of it typical sixth-grade stuff, like puberty and crushes; some of it heavier, like finding an abandoned baby in the woods.

A good follow-up, but not as good as the first. Held my interest and I'll pick up the third when it's available, but I'm not going to be telling kids they NEED to pick up this sequel.

liked this sequel more than the first one. I am in grade 10 and this book was more mature than the last one which is why I think i liked it more. This book, in my opinion is definitely not for 8 year olds. It talks about serious topics (mild substance abuse and other upsetting topics) If you are young and not that mature I dont recommend it. Other than that I absolutely loved and the ups and downs this book goes through.

didn't LOVE it as the first.

I enjoyed the second book in this series. I still really like the characters.
adventurous challenging medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

This was an okay sequel and was not what I was expecting.

I enjoyed the overall themes and story but did not appreciate the negative portrayal of Native Americans and the girls in the class puberty episodes were clearly from a male perspective. Those two subjects should have been omitted.

Sixth graders definitely don't have some of these problems. They act more like eighth or ninth graders

great sequel to Because of Mr. Terupt - no drop in quality here :)
adventurous emotional funny hopeful inspiring lighthearted relaxing medium-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes

Good in 6th grade, still good in 11th grade
