I was confused about the witch clans in previous books so I was excited to get a better look at this part of the world.
There's one character who's clearly trans/non-binary. The problem is that it wasn't clear at first. This character is written as using he and she pronouns. As a member of the queer community, I applaud the author for this as it's something I actually haven't seen yet. Unfortunately, I don't think it served the character very well. I think for the average reader this is likely to be confusing. A one sentence explanation when the character is initially described would have been helpful. We didn't even get a physical description of this character when they are introduced, adding to the confusion.
Some of this story was too close to reality after the protests of 2020. It was hard to listen to and I considered not finishing.
In the end justice is served and the author ties the series up in a neat little bow.

From an award winning book 1 to a conclusion worse than a lot of fanfic....

This book had a lot of smart comments on contemporary issues. It was also quite predictable, and I am very okay with that.

Takeaways:
- Justice initiatives do so much hard work
- Greed is destructive
- Absolute power is corrupting
- Exploitation is terrible and has lasting, wide ranging repercussions
- All Cats Are Beautiful
- It's very good to explore the meaning of unexamined values
- Take time for the small moments, these are precious and irreplaceable
