I do not like to DNF books, but this one really had me considering.
I have been so excited to read this and really wanted to like it but holy wow no. The writing was bad and was more of “telling” writing. The story felt like it was dragging on while also too fast at the same time? I am all for an enemies to lovers trope but this felt extremely rushed and out of place to me. Also seemed to be heavily influenced by ACOTAR.
Not my cup of tea.

I’m not really sure how exactly I feel about this book. I loved the story line and was excited for the trials to be over. The MMC was kind of too forward with how the situation was going. I am very interested how her being a scientist and an assassin at the same time come together.
I am very much hoping to see how the rest of the series goes.

I dnf’ed at 31%
It’s only at the 30% mark that we get to Callie being in the fae realm. And when we do get to that point… it was just a let down.
I did really enjoy the way Callie as a biologist was written. And I say that as a marine biologist. The struggles of being a young woman and being passed over because it’s expected you’ll wants a family and kids. Also how your looks and just being a woman gets you treated by the public.
Callie as a character though was just… cardboard. I get being very goal orientated, but come on even these people make an effort to have a damn social life.

Poor writing but I found the story compelling until we got to the "twist" which made no damn sense because we were in Callie's head for like 90% of the book. I have no desire to finish the series after that.

4*’s.
This started out a little rocky, I genuinely couldn’t get past the moth babble. It was reading very chestnut springs, farm girl bollocks for a hot minute which just wasn’t what I was after. It took me about 6 days to get 76 pages in bc of this babble bollocks. But then it picked up and I sat down and read the rest in one day. There are so many plot holes in this thing, but I didn’t really care honestly. I was in SUCH a reading funk and this managed to drag me out of the hellhole of a slump I was in.
Will read book two, purely bc I’m a little baffled by the ending and just need to know where it goes.

Is it a literary masterpiece? Hell no. Is it a pretty good mood read with some decent spice? Hell yah. Sometimes that’s all I need and could possibly ask for.
