Lone Wolf

-probably too short for storytime
-perfect recommendation for a young dog lover
-great for future dog displays

Maple loves being the Parker's dog. She plays tug of war with Jax, reads on the couch with Avery, gets treats from Mom, and tricks Dad into taking her for long walks. But everyone in the neighborhood keeps asking if Maple is a wolf. Her family explains that Huskies are very different from wolves, but soon even Maple wonders if she might be a wolf. When Maple tries to go into the woods like a real wolf, she soon discovers that being a wild wolf is no joke and nowhere near as fun as hanging out with her own pack--right where she belongs.

Kurpiel's artwork is really fun with a cartoony look. The page design is used really well with a surprise ultra closeup of Maple's face on a two page spread, a map of Maple's neighborhood, and even a chart about wolves vs huskies which make reading this book a full experience.

The artwork thoughtfully adds to the story and reflects a neighborhood that is inclusive and diverse, filled with a variety of people of all ages and skintones. Avery uses an electric wheelchair. (The endpapers feature dogs of every variety too.)

Beautiful illustrations, and a lovely story about identity.

Big thanks to my friend, Emily, for the front porch delivery! I love Lone Wolf! Great to see illustrations of a character who uses a wheelchair BY an author-illustrator who uses a wheelchair. Sometimes wheelchair illustrations feel phony.

Loved it ❤️ family and belonging

Dog wonders whether he might actually be a wolf, studies the characteristics, tries it, NOT happy. Goes home to his pack (i.e. family). Love that one of the kids is in a wheelchair, never mentioned.

Cute and fun, love the illustrations.

Maple loves being the Parker family dog even though some humans insist she MUST be part wolf. Maple starts to consider this and escapes into the woods one day. Maybe this new adventure will help her discover who she is and where she belongs.
adventurous relaxing

Picture book. Maple is a husky dog that lives with the Parker family and often gets mistaken for a wolf.  There is even a diagram comparing a wolf and a husky on one page spread. Eventually, Maple takes advantage of the open gate and sees if she really does belong in the wild. But howling and hunting are different when she's all alone, and when it's time for her evening walk all she wants to do is find her pack.

A cute simple story that celebrates the comfort of family and routine, this is a good choice for read-aloud for toddler and preschool aged children.  The pictures include one family member in a power wheelchair.  The adorable endpapers made me think of the opening scene to the animated 101 Dalmatians movie with all of the different dogs walking by.
