As for the other volumes; there are cws, I won't mention them, but they can be easily found on the internet.
SO; already with the previous volume, I was slightly... skeptical shall we say. But then, with this volume...
I almost completely hated it. She add new things to us; so we discover. There are events that, okay, that's fine. But others... I don't understand why you had to add that to the story. Even if, in a certain sense, it makes sense on the merits.
And then, a big part of the book... What happened in the head of the author ? Already I sometimes had trouble with Rose's actions and thoughts; but then there... I reached a stage where I sincerely wondered if I was going to continue reading.
And then I said to myself that given the success of the saga, it was going to improve. I expect the improvement in the next volume, because the end of this one did not satisfy me.
Obviously, I'm curious about what's next, but I'm less enthusiastic than at the start.

Now that I've given myself a moment to step back, I honestly don't know what to think about the latest installment in the VA series. There were some things I really enjoyed about it, some tings that bothered me, and one thing in particular that really irked me. I still like the series as a whole and the characters will keep me coming back, but this book... Well, let's talk about it.

On one hand, I really enjoyed seeing Rose on her own without Lissa constantly by her side. The previous book alluded to how much of a crutch their bond was for the two of them, but this book brought that to sharper focus. On the other, the narration suffered for it as it struggled to tell both girls' stories while they were separated.

The developments on Dimitri did nothing to win me over for his romance with Rose. I don't know if it's my own stubbornness or what, but I simply can't bring myself to root for them. Which is why the new information on Strigoi disappointed me so much. I was honestly and truly hoping that the author did something daring with their romance story, but sadly it doesn't look like that will be the case.

Let's talk a moment about minor characters. I am a champion of minor characters and oftentimes find them far more interesting than the main ones. That's why it disappointed me that characters such as Eddie and Mia were hardly a blip on the radar for this book, and instead we are introduced to even more characters. Can authors for once simply develop the ones they have rather than continue to throw new ones out there? I would've much preferred seeing more of Adrian and Christian.

Aside from the Strigoi development, the thing bothering me most in this series is the thing that always bothers me with these types of books: the question of "why now"? Spirit users are supposedly rare, yet they're coming out of the woodworks. Why the focus on Lissa if Victor knew about another spirit user? And many other "whys" that are frustrating to work through.

Of course I'm going to continue reading because, as I said, the characters are interesting and I really want to see what happens to them. There's also the small part of me holding out for a surprise from our author. She's emphasized before that the world is cruel and things aren't going to be easy for anyone. I can only hope she holds true to that.
