¿WHAT.JUST.HAPPENED?

Mira, A LOS ARBOLES NO LOS VAS A ESTAR MATANDO DE OQUIS ME ENTENDISTE?!

Simplemente no. NO.

If Rose thought she had it bad in the past it was nothing like she had to face now. Now she is on a mission to kill the man she loves, a man that is no longer the same person but a cruel and soulless Strigoi. Having to leave Lissa behind is only one of the things that is breaking her heart.

I thought Rose changed a lot throughout this book. She knew what she had to do and how she had to keep her promise. Despite everything to grew into herself and even learned that she has to start trusting those around her. All of the plot developments in this book were purely delightful, some I was expecting or had previously anticipated but that didn't detract from the author’s delivery of them. I also wasn't surprised by the ending but can't wait to read how it turns out!

Blood Promise by Richelle Mead
Spoiler-light review

This book broke me and rebuilt me and then broke me again. I’m not sure I’ll ever be the same.

Blood Promise is not just the 4th book in the Vampire Academy series - it is a grief-laced odyssey. It is Rose Hathaway walking into the darkest parts of herself, of the world, of love and loss and identity. It is a shift in tone, a slow inwards-spiral.

The story opens after that devastating twist in Shadow Kiss. Rose leaves behind the people she loves - including Lissa - to keep a promise that somewhat feels like an unpayablw debt; To find Dimitri and kill him. The emotional weight of that mission hangs over every single page. And yet it doesn’t drag. The pacing is contemplative, it does not feel slow. You feel Rose’s pain and resolve deepen with each chapter.

We get to meet Dimitri’s family in Russia. A family that is so incredibly open-hearted, grieving and unexpectedly healing. I fell for them almost immediately. Grandma Yeva? An unexpected standout. Mysterious, eerie and wise. They give Rose something she’s never really had. A feeling of home. Of belonging. Which makes everything that comes after hurt even more.

Then there is Strigoi Dimitri. If you’re here for comfort you won’t find it. He is everything Rose feared - manipulative, cold and unrecognizable. And in spite of this, still himself. It is a horrifying blend. Their scenes are twisted and complex, especially with the … addiction subplot. I won’t say much, but it is disturbing in the exact way it was meant to be. Painful, disorienting and emotionally suffocating. You keep telling the character to see through the manipulation, through the cloud of the daze and … nope. You want to look away, but you can’t. Many people gush over Strigoi Dimitri - but me? I just wanted that stake to find it’s target as soon as possible. This version of Dimitri hugely icked me.

Meanwhile in all this, Lissa is spiraling. Her bond with Rose is fractured, her choices reckless and her kind nature is faded. Something dark is clawing at her - and not just metaphorically. The consequences of spirit are becoming too real, too destructive. Watching her lose herself while Rose is unable to help? Haven’t we dealt with enough heart matters above? Of course not! This needed to be thrown into the mix of emotions as well.

And let us not forget about dear, happy-go-lucky… air… user… Avery. The new girl with secrets buried deep and sharp. I did not expect her arc to unfold the way it did, but I was gripped. Something wasn’t right from the very start, but I could not see this coming my way. Mind games, power plays and Spirit users pushing their magic into places it was never meant to go. By the end, I had chills.

The true triumph of Blood Promise is and will forever be Rose’s development. This isn’t anywhere close to the Rose we met in the first book. This one is scarred, wiser and more haunted but is very much still a fighter despite all of this. Always fighting for what is right. For love. For herself. The emotional resonance of her final decision in this book made me feel every word in my heart, in my bones.

And then … that final chapter. Filled with reunion, joy, good food - and then the last few pages hit. Like an ice storm. Just when you think it is over, that is when it is no where near over. I had plans to take a break from the next book with something else. But no. Spirit Bound, I’m coming at godspeed.

I love these books, but this one is my least favorite in the series. There are parts that I enjoyed, such as learning about Dimitri's family and meeting Sydney, but this particular book is hard to get through. I strongly dislike Lissa's storyline and I find Rose more difficult to relate to in this book. Her decisions are questionable and selfish. However, her adventure is important in leading up to important storylines in Blood Promise.

Holy crap. Holy crap ! HOLY CRAP !
This book was intense and insane and just agaksnekeo !
I'll admit the beginning was long but once it took off. Man it really took off!
