*mild spoilers ahead*

My original rating was 4 stars, but just like with Frostbite, I had to bump that up to 4.5 stars. Because THE FEELS.

This book was really sort of the turning point for the novels and Rose's character. It's much darker, and Rose endures some pretty messed up sh*t in this one. It's also such a bittersweet novel--we find out that Dimitri's not dead, but he is something worse, undead. Every Moroi and dhampir's worst nightmare has become a reality for our favorite duster-wearing badass, and worse yet he has seemed to embrace his new life with the gusto he once vehemently rejected it.

And although this novel centers around Dimitri's transformation, we only see him for a small portion of the novel. His time with Rose only takes up about 150-200 out of 500 pages, which was surprising to me during this reread. But maybe that was a good thing as I don't think I could take much more of Dimitri and Rose trying to kill each other. There were also so many new old memories in this novel that I had forgotten about, and they were nice distractions during the craziness of the novel.

Rose's extended stay with the Belikov family was so wonderful to read. We FINALLY got to meet Dimitri's family and see a little bit into his past and how he transformed into the man that we--along with Rose--love today. Yeva was a frustrating but necessary character, while Karolina and Olena were more of the strong and silent types that Dimitri so embodies. We also get to meet another spirit user and her partner, who is able to shed some more light on this elusive element.

Overall, this novel was such a roller coaster of emotions that my heart had a hard time keeping up. Out of all of the VA books, Blood Promise is the one that I have reread the least simply because it's just so hard to get through emotionally. However, we learn so much in this novel that you have to read it in order to get to the HEA. I cried so much during this one, but it's still an amazing addition to the series.

My [Strigoi] Dimitri...

*I loved that I was able to find this picture, as he really does look like a Strigoi :(

This was definitely not my favorite book in the series....
I think I missed the time at the Academy, the only time we got to see any of that is when Rose was in Lyssa's Head... and I guess I just missed the old gang... most of this book takes place in Russia either looking for or been captured by Dimitri... now I really did like his family, and I also like learning about some of the new powers, but other than that, something felt a bit off... I will definitely continue the series, because I do like these characters, and I do want to see where this all goes, but this was not my favorite...
Also I listen to this on audio, as I have all the books, and the narrator did something very weird with Dimitri's voice, and that might have been what threw me off the entire time, not sure...

4.5

"I will always love you."

"That’s what I was supposed to say..."

God this one is soooo devestating.
adventurous dark emotional tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

people do not kid when they say this series gets better with each book. Oh, why did I ever abandon this beautiful chaos of a series!

This book is the best one in the series yet, though not by much compared to the last book. The middle was a bit of a drag but never boring. All the new characters grew on me quickly, especially Sydney and Abe. And the twist in the end was bloody awesome. Not the very last twist, I hated that one. But I loved the second last twist.

Final thoughts: Why won't *he* just DIE???!

i had such a hard time following and connecting all the new info into all i already knew, i cant belive what a suprize everything that happend in the boo was to me.cant wait to read the next book.

Incredible, but a heck of a lot inappropriate than the ones before.

OMG.....wow...great book. rose went thru some.pretty bad situations and how Dimitri ended up back in her life...well not the way she wanted...lots of suspense drama surprises and wows.
