The rating is purely for "The Cosmos" and "Heal" sections, as I felt these were the only ones I connected with. I've read the entire collection, and I thought many of the poems were beautifully written, but the other sections are simply not relevant to me at point in my life. I would've probably appreciated them in my teenage years/early 20's.

this poetry collection was very beautiful written however i did feel like it lacked substance. it almost felt as thought there was no distinction between each poem and they all just were a variation of each other. the only section i felt offered more of a deeper meaning was the final section ‘heal’.

My Actual Rating : 3.5 out of 5

My very first read this year. I enjoyed this poetry collection. I thought the astronomical theme was brilliant. My only problem was some words and messages were used repetitively and it loses the poem's meaning. Overall, Nikita Gill's writing is beautiful and her poems are heartfelt and inspiring. Here are some of my favorites:

YOUR HEART AND SKIN

Your heart is not a hotel
with rooms to rent out
whenever you find yourself
alone.

Turn your alone
imto a place of comfort.
Your skin should be
a place that you can call home.

A FINAL LESSON FROM THE OCEAN

The ocean holds magic
for those who seek it
but she only bestows
her best magic
on those
who deserve it.

There is a lesson
int hat for you.
give your best
to those who deserve it,
not to everyone
who seeks it.

THE SOUND OF HEARTBREAK

It is eerily terrifying that there is no sound when a heart breaks. Car accidents end with a bang, falling ends with a thud, even writing makes the scratching sound of pencil against paper. But the sound of a heart breaking is completely silent. Almost as though no one, not even the universe itself could create a sound for such devastation. Almost as though silence is the only way the universe could pay its respect to the sound of a heart falling apart.

Nikita Gill is one of my favourite modern poets. Her works are not too straightforward—you know, the empowering quotes or passages you can find on the Internet people nowadays call "poems"—yet do not pale in the presentation of metaphors and analogies.

I love how this collection of poems are divided respectively into its each element of nature so despite of how abstract poems are, this gives a measure of organization and flow to the poems. I like going into the "ocean" section and having twenty different poems talking about unpredictable things but referring to the waves in different angles.

I like where poetry is going nowadays. It doesn't feel as inaccessible as long-winded poetry, and I like it when someone can make a point in a limited number of words.

I've been following Nikita Gill on tumblr for years, this is incredible to be able to see her poetry in a more traditional published format.
Sadly, Your Soul is a River did not fully resonate with me, but I still think it is beautiful. I loved the concept of the chapters being divided by themes/part of the world. For example, she used the universe, the ocean and the earth to pull out advices on how to heal, to grow, and to not feel guilty on the way we react to abuse, grief and heartbreak. Honestly this is a strong concept, and the poems were good (sometimes simple which is good, sometimes a bit too simple). My favourites were the one who used facts like the Aspen Grove.

Even though I did not love this how much I wanted to, I will read the rest of her books.

I give up, modern poetry is just not for me.
