my 2024 is dedicated to reading more revolutionary and political texts <3 grateful for the new introduction to this edition which addresses many of the homophobic and ableist sentiments that Davis at the time of writing used. Not like we don’t know this, but so compelling for her clear documentation of the repressiveness of the prison industrial complex, and also how, very clearly, all oppressive systems are interlinked. A little slow and bogged up in the minutiae at times, but honestly maybe I needed to see all the intricacies of what political organising looks like.

Geschafft! Ich habe einen ganzen Monat dafür gebraucht, aber nicht, weil das Buch besonders lang oder besonders zäh war (ist es beides nicht), sondern nur, weil es auf verschiedene Arten schwer zu ertragen war. Erstens wie das Leben aussieht, wenn intensives politisches Engagement die normale, naheliegende Reaktion auf Missstände ist, und wie unbekannt mir das alles leider ist. Zweitens die Probleme von damals, die noch etwas scheußlicher waren als die aktuellen. Drittens die Konfrontation damit, dass ich das alles jederzeit hätte wissen können, das Buch ist fast so alt wie ich. Ich habe es nur nicht gelesen. Positiv, wenn man so will, war nur die Erkenntnis, dass 1970 alles praktisch genau wie jetzt war, wir leben gar nicht in irgendeiner Ausnahmezeit. Ich war vielleicht nur ein bisschen verwöhnt durch die 90er, und natürlich durch Unwissen.
