This sweet little memoir will give you some hope for the world and remind you that compassion is never wasted. Italian veterinarian Massimo Vacchetta was working as a large animal vet, visiting farms and dealing with cows for the most part. In his personal life, he had erected armor around his heart, fearful that caring too much would inevitably lead to loss and heartbreak. Then one day, someone brought him an orphaned baby hedgehog who needed intense care and constant attention if she were to survive.

The tiny creature, which he soon named Ninna, took over his life and his heart. He spent hours concocting the perfect formula to help her thrive, woke up multiple times at night to feed her and refresh her hot water bottle, and even changed his vacation plans so he wouldn't have to leave her. Pretty soon he found himself with a second rescue hedgehog. And then a third.

Eventually, it turned into a calling and Vacchetta bought a piece of property where he opened La Ninna Rescue Center, dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of hedgehogs so that they can be released back into the wild.

Every once in a while, if you're lucky, you read a book and feel a deep sense of kinship with the author. I read about Massimo's love for hedgehogs, sense of poetry, and deep desire to make the world a better place, and it struck a chord, as if my heart already knew the tune. This one will stay with me for a long time.

This was so adorable. I usually don’t give books five star ratings if I don’t think they’re worthy of being reread, but I had to make an exception for this one. (I’m not going to read this again because I know what is going to be written, and books like this are always enjoyed more during the first reading .)

I love the writing. It’s easy to read. I also love the length. It’s not as long as most books, but the content is outstanding. I like short books. They don’t drag on about things that aren’t important. This book met my expectations and then exceeded them.

I love the descriptions. I love everything. This book left me smiling and crying slightly. It was that sweet.

It is so odd to me that hedgehogs are wild animals but of course they are! Wonderful story of a vet who wasn't emotionally attached to animals who falls head over heels for a hedgehog and then hedgehogs in general.
