Cults are a topic that deeply interests me so this one was a fun read despite being very surface-level information but it was interesting and I did learn a few things I didn't know before. Plus the exploration of more "untraditional" cults was cool as well. I don't think I would have gotten through this if I hadn't listened to the audiobook version because this way it was like a long podcast on cults but I think it would drag on too much and be too repetitive if I had tried to read it in any other format. I probably would have dnf it if it wasn't for the audiobook.

at once informative and genuinely funny (but never disrespectful), Cultish is right at the intersection of two things I've pondered studying seriously: sociolinguistics and religious studies. such a fascinating, engrossing book and a rare look at cults of all types with both criticism and empathy.
also learned that the mom of one of my childhood friends, who is a well-respected professor with a PhD, was involved in an MLM scheme (LuLaRoe), which I think cements Montell's thesis that it isn't only the uneducated who fall prey to "cultish" schemes.

What a fun and informative and thought provoking read! I loved how focused it was, Montell doesn’t necessarily cover all of the factors that create cults and make us join them, but creates a convincing argument about the role of language in all of the groups, movements, Instagram pages, and cults we may join. I loved the lightness and compassion she wrote with while also balancing the very real layers of oppression, harm, inequality, and trauma that come with the subject. I kind of wish this kept going, there’s just so much to mine here! This was so accessible and just a fun thing to read.
